Hair curlers: curls, waves and volume that suit your hair

Hair curlers are one of the quickest ways to change your look, whether you want loose waves, defined curls, or lift through the ends. In the UK, shoppers often search by the result and the tool style, such as curling tong, curling wand, curling iron, automatic hair curler, cordless curler, or interchangeable curling set. The best choice is the one that gives you control over heat and shape, feels comfortable to hold, and matches your hair length and texture.

Best for:
- Curls and waves that hold their shape for longer
- Adding movement and volume without a full blow-dry routine
- A smoother, more polished finish for events and everyday styling

This category sits within Hair Styling Tools, alongside tools for prep and finishing.

Choose the curler type first: tong, wand, or automatic

Curling tongs have a clamp that holds hair in place. They can feel more straightforward for beginners, but clamping too tightly can leave a crease.

Curling wands have no clamp. You wrap hair around the barrel by hand, which can create softer curls with fewer clamp marks. Tapered wands give variety from one barrel.

Automatic curlers draw hair into a chamber and curl it for you. They suit anyone who wants consistent results with less wrapping technique, as long as you work in neat sections so hair feeds smoothly.

If you are mainly chasing a modern, uniform wave pattern rather than a curl, Hair Wavers may be the better match.

What to compare: barrel size, temperature control, and the details that protect hair

Curlers can look similar on a product list. The things that change results in real life are barrel size and shape, temperature control, and how predictably the tool holds heat without forcing you to overstyle.

Barrel size and shape: the quickest way to predict the result

Barrel size is the simplest guide to the curl you will get.
- Smaller barrels (roughly 13 to 19mm): tighter curls, short hair, and more defined texture.
- Mid-size barrels (around 25 to 28mm): classic curls and versatile waves.
- Larger barrels (around 32mm and up): loose, “big wave” styling and softer movement.

Tapered barrels are useful if you want a looser curl at the root and a tighter curl through the ends. Interchangeable barrel sets can suit households with different hair lengths or if you like switching between styles.

Heat settings: start lower, then increase only if needed

Heat is what makes a curl hold, but it is also what can weaken hair if you go too hot too often. If you heat-style regularly, adjustable temperature helps you reduce repeated passes on the same section, which is usually where damage builds. For fine, coloured, or fragile hair, lower temperatures are often the more sensible place to start, and you can increase only if your hair is not holding shape.

Barrel materials and “ionic” claims: treat them as secondary

Curlers are commonly sold with ceramic, titanium, or tourmaline coatings. Marketing often links these materials with smoother results and less frizz, and tourmaline is commonly associated with negative ions that can help reduce static and flyaways for some people. Treat this as a helpful extra and judge the tool on fundamentals: heat settings, barrel size, and ease of use.

Comfort and convenience: weight, cord, and auto shut-off

A curler that feels awkward is harder to use consistently. Look for a comfortable grip, a cord long enough for your mirror setup, and a swivel cord that reduces tangling. Auto shut-off is also a sensible feature for peace of mind, particularly if styling is part of a busy morning routine.

Cordless curlers can be useful for travel and quick touch-ups, but check whether battery life suits your hair length. For longer hair, cordless is often best for finishing rather than styling a full head from dry.

Choose by hair type and the style you actually wear

Fine hair and fragile ends

Fine hair can hold shape well, but it can be prone to heat damage and breakage if you overdo temperature. Adjustable heat and a smooth barrel finish matter more than maximum heat. A smaller to mid-size barrel often gives definition without overworking ends.

Thick hair and hard-to-hold curls

Thick hair often benefits from steadier heat delivery. Mid-size barrels are versatile for classic curls, while larger barrels suit softer waves. Consistent section size usually improves how evenly curls set and how long they last.

Curly, wavy, and textured hair

For textured hair, curlers are often used for shape and definition rather than creating curls from scratch. Lower heat settings can help refine ends without flattening your natural pattern. If you want a sleeker finish with bends and waves, [Hair Straighteners & Hair Stylers](https://www.pricepop.com/c/health-beauty/electrical/hair-styling-tools/hair-straighteners-hair-stylers/) can also create curls and waves with the right technique.

Practical ownership and safer use: keep styling calm and lower the risk of burns

Hair curlers get hot enough to burn skin and damage surfaces, so basic safety habits matter. Avoid using a curler near water, and do not keep using a tool with a damaged cord. When you are finished, unplug it and let it cool on a heat-resistant surface, then store it out of reach while it cools fully, especially in homes with children.

A heat-resistant mat or pouch and a cool tip can make styling feel more controlled. Clear temperature indicators and a stable stand also reduce accidental contact with hot surfaces.

Build a simple routine that helps curls last

Most curlers perform best on fully dry hair. If you want a smoother base before curling, a controlled blow-dry can help, which is why Hair Dryers are a natural companion category. If you want volume and bouncy ends with less wrapping, Hot Brushes & Air Stylers can be a practical alternative for softer movement and a one-tool finish.
