Side-by-side puts a tall fridge column next to a tall freezer column. You see everything without bending, and the narrower doors swing into less of the room. Good for households that freeze a lot.

French-door places a wide fridge across the top with a freezer drawer or pair of drawers below. Wide shelves swallow party platters and tall bottles, and you only open half the fridge for everyday grabs, which helps cold air stay in.

A full-width American fridge freezer is around 910 mm wide. Plenty of UK kitchens were built before that became normal, so measure first. The slim Hisense options sit closer to 700-790 mm wide, which is the difference between fitting an alcove and not.

Plumbed gives you continuous chilled water and automatic ice with no refilling, but you need a cold-water supply and an isolating valve within reach. Non-plumbed runs from an internal tank you top up, which means you can place the fridge anywhere a socket reaches. Some models skip the dispenser entirely, which gives you a flatter front and one less thing to maintain.

Total capacity on Hisense American models typically runs from the mid-400s of litres up to around 640 L. Pick the size you'll actually fill. A larger cabinet running half-empty costs more to run than a right-sized one that's properly stocked.

Total No Frost stops ice forming on the back wall and means you skip defrosting. Multi Air Flow pushes chilled air to every shelf so milk in the door sits at a similar temperature to salad at the back. Inverter compressors adjust speed to demand, which holds steadier temperatures and runs quieter. Humidity-controlled drawers keep leaves crisper for longer.

The current A-to-G energy label tells you running cost over years of use, so even small differences add up. Noise is quoted in decibels: numbers in the high 30s are normal for an American-style cabinet, low 40s is acceptable, anything higher is worth thinking twice about if the fridge sits near a sofa or open-plan dining.

If you already have a range cooker or built-in oven, match the metal tone rather than the door colour, because reflections in the fridge front read as the dominant finish from across the room.
