1400 Spin Washing Machines
A 1400 rpm spin pulls a serious amount of water out of every load, so clothes come off the drum closer to dry, tumble-dryer cycles run shorter and line-drying speeds up. It's the sweet spot most UK households land on, fast enough to matter, gentle enough for everyday fabrics.

Why 1400 rpm is the spin speed most homes land on
Spin speed is measured in revolutions per minute, and it only affects the final part of the cycle, when water is flung out of the drum. A 1400 spin washer leaves noticeably less moisture in fabrics than a 1200, which is the difference between a t-shirt that's damp to the touch and one that's almost wearable straight off the rack. Push higher to 1600 rpm and you'll squeeze out a touch more water, but creasing and noise both creep up. For most laundry routines, a 1400 rpm washing machine is the practical default. Read More...
Matching capacity to the way you actually do laundry
Drum capacity sets the rhythm of your week. A 7 kg 1400 spin washing machine handles a one or two person household comfortably and copes with a single duvet cover at a push. An 8 kg 1400 spin washing machine is the workhorse size for couples and small families, with enough room for mixed loads to tumble freely so the rinse and spin both perform better. A 9 kg 1400 spin washing machine starts to earn its keep for families of three or four, especially if towels and bedding are in regular rotation. A 10 kg model suits busy households and anyone who'd rather run one big wash than two small ones, and 11 kg territory is for high-volume homes or anyone who washes pet bedding, sports kit and household textiles in bulk.
Freestanding or integrated, which way to go
A freestanding 1400 spin washer drops in anywhere with a cold feed, a waste and a 13-amp socket, and it's the simpler choice if you ever plan to take the appliance with you. An 8 kg integrated washing machine hides behind a matching kitchen door, which keeps a fitted kitchen looking unbroken and softens the noise a little. Integrated stock is narrower across brands, so if a specific finish or feature matters, check freestanding first.
Features that change the day-to-day experience
A quick wash programme of 15 to 30 minutes is the one most people use most often, and it's worth checking how heavy a load it accepts. Steam and hygiene cycles help with allergens, baby clothes and items that can't be washed hot. Auto-dosing meters detergent to the load, which means cleaner rinsing and less waste. Anti-stain or stain-removal programmes (a Hotpoint speciality) target specific stains with tailored temperature and agitation. Inverter motors run quieter at full 1400 spin and tend to last longer, worth the upgrade if the machine sits near a living space.
Brands worth knowing before you choose
Brands you'll typically see at 1400 rpm include Hotpoint, Samsung, AEG, Hoover, Beko, Candy, LG, Haier, Bosch, Smeg, Indesit and Montpellier. Hotpoint is the volume choice with a deep range across capacities and a strong showing in graphite as well as white. Samsung leans into bigger drums and EcoBubble pre-mixing. AEG sits at the premium end with ProSteam and ÖKOMix. Bosch and LG bring quiet inverter motors. Beko, Candy, Hoover and Indesit anchor the value tier without dropping the 1400 spin spec. Energy class A is well represented across brands, with B, C and D options if budget is the main driver.
Frequently Asked Questions
For most households, 1400 rpm is plenty. The jump from 1200 to 1400 is significant, the jump from 1400 to 1600 is incremental and brings more creasing and a bit more noise. Stretch to 1600 only if you tumble-dry heavily or rely on indoor drying through winter.
An 8 kg or 9 kg 1400 spin washing machine is the sensible bracket for four. Eight kilos is fine if you're happy doing two or three washes a week. Nine kilos gives breathing room for towels, bedding and the inevitable kit run, and it lets bulky items move freely so rinsing and spinning both work better.
Most 8 kg integrated washing machines are built to the standard 82 cm housing height and 60 cm width, designed to sit behind a hinged cabinet door. Confirm the housing dimensions on the spec sheet before buying, and check the door hinge side matches the layout.
Energy classes run A (most efficient) through to D on the current label. Heating water dominates running cost, so a class A machine paired with cooler eco programmes will noticeably out-save a class C running on hotter cycles. The on-label kWh per 100 cycles figure is the most honest comparison.
Quick wash is genuinely useful for lightly soiled clothes and refresher loads, typically 15 to 30 minutes for 1 to 4 kg. It's not the right choice for stained items, heavily soiled workwear or items that need a thermal hygiene wash, where temperature and time do most of the cleaning.
Look for the spin dB rating on the energy label. Below 73 dB is quiet for the class, around 76 dB is average, and anything above starts to intrude in open-plan kitchens. Inverter and direct-drive motors usually post the best numbers.
If you wash kids' clothes, sports kit or workwear regularly, an anti-stain programme is a genuine time-saver because it tunes temperature and drum action to specific stain types. Steam is most useful for refreshing items, easing creases and tackling allergens on bedding.
Around 8 to 11 years is a reasonable expectation, longer with care. Use the right detergent dose, leave the door ajar between washes to dry the seal, run a maintenance wash monthly, and clear the pump filter twice a year. Inverter motors typically outlast brushed motors.
