The number on the label is dry-load weight, not how full to stuff it. 7 kg suits a single person or couple who run laundry every couple of days. 8 kg is the sensible middle for small families and handles a double duvet in most models. 9 kg is the volume sweet spot in black, with the widest brand and price spread, and it copes with king-size bedding. 10 kg, 11 kg and above make sense if you wash bulky items often, because larger drums let fabrics tumble freely and rinse better. 1400 rpm is the default across most black models and it's enough for everyday cottons. Step up to 1600 rpm if you tumble-dry frequently, because clothes leave the drum drier and dryer cycles get noticeably shorter. 1200 rpm machines are fine for delicate-heavy households but expect longer drying. Higher spin speeds also need a stable, level floor to avoid walking and noise.

The vast majority of black washing machines are freestanding, which means the door, dial and finish are on show, so design choices like matte versus gloss actually matter. Integrated black machines exist but are rare, because integrated units sit behind a cupboard door and the visible colour is the door, not the appliance. Energy labels run A to D across this set. A higher class saves money over a ten-year life, but the gap is smaller than the badge suggests, because the eco programme does most of the heavy lifting. Auto dosing and steam refresh are the two add-ons that earn their keep day to day, the first because it stops over-soaping, the second because it cuts ironing on shirts and bedding.

Matte black hides fingerprints and dust better than gloss, and scratches show less when they happen. Gloss black looks sharper next to stainless steel but needs a wipe down most days in a busy kitchen. Either way, leave the door and detergent drawer ajar between washes to ventilate, run a hot drum-clean cycle once a month, and wipe the door seal so it doesn't go furry. A black exterior won't change any of that, but it will make watermarks more obvious if you skip it.
